The Housing Requirement

All students with fewer than six quarters/four semesters in the residence halls prior to the quarter in which they enroll must reside in university-owned housing and participate in the associated mandatory meal plan, subject to the exemptions listed below.  Please Note: College credits earned by a student while attending high school (advanced placement, senior to sophmore, Senate bill 140, etc) which advances a student academically to a higher class year, will not be considered toward housing exemption eligibility.

Continuing students must have spent six quarters/four semesters in residence prior to the beginning of the fall quarter to be exempt. This rule applies to transfer, relocating, and re-enrolling students.

Students subject to the housing regulation who fail to comply with this condition of registration may have their registration denied or cancelled.

Students who meet any of the following conditions can request to be excused from the housing regulation. Documentation may be required to support the exemption request.

  1. Students with fewer than six quarters/ four semesters in residence enrolled in 10 or less credit hours during the fall, winter, or spring quarters, and for four or less credit hours during a summer session.
  2. Married students or single parents who live with their spouse or children within commuting distance (50 miles) of the university.
  3. Students who live with parents or legal guardians whose permanent residence is within commuting distance (50 miles) of the university.
  4. Students with one academic year (three quarters/ two semesters) in residence and living in a recognized fraternity or sorority houses.  Participation in a recognized Fraternity/Sorority (Greek Housing): (1) Must have completed one academic year (3 full-time quarters/2 semesters) in residence prior to fall quarter. This exemption is not available to to continuing students once the academic year begins. Newly elected officers who are required to reside in the house will be considered for review. Student requests for Greek Housing must approved by the Campus Involvement Center.
  5. Student who have 18 months or more of active military service.
  6. Students 23 years of age or older prior to the beginning of the academic quarter in which they enroll.

NOTE: Continuing students with two years in residence prior to the beginning of the fall quarter, and new transfer students with two years in residence at another institution may reside in off-campus housing that meets their individual needs. The University bears no responsibility for the living conditions or problems arising therein with either the homeowner or the student resident.

SPECIAL STATUS STUDENTS (ie: OPIE, Study Abroad, etc): All special status students must comply with the above regulation. Please direct questions or concerns about special status housing needs to housing@ohio.edu.
