July 20, 2009 Battery Recycling Battery recycling is now available to all departments on campus. Campus Recycling can provide buckets for department to use to collect batteries. We will accept any kind of battery. - Lithium batteries, like the button batteries, need to have the nodes taped because these sometimes have the capability to heat up if they are touching another node or metal that still retains a charge. They have been known to ignite. Please use caution!
- If you would like battery bucket with a label on it, please submit an online work request: https://www.facilities.ohiou.edu/requests/
- We send these along with other Universal Waste like florescent tubes, compact fluorescents and ballast to USA Lamp & Ballast Recycling, Inc. They remove the parts to the batteries and lights and recover it all. OU is a large generator of these materials and we are required by law to recover these properly because they contain Mercury. Monitors and televisions are also included in this category. Our Moving & Surplus department handles the removal and sale of these items.
- We also take rechargeable batteries. Those have a value and we use the money we get for selling those to help cover the costs of battery recycling. Here is a list of what USA Lamp and Ballast takes:
- Mercury Containing Articles: Florescent HID Lamps, Neon Lamps, Mirrored Spot Lamps, UV Lamps, Ignitron Tubes, Thermometers, Mercury Switches
- Batteries: Alkaline, Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Hydride, Zinc Carbon, Zinc Carbonair, Lead Acid, Lead Acid Steel Case, Mercury, Silver Oxides, Button, Lithium, Lithium Ion
